Easter is on the way and for those of us with dairy intolerances and allergies it can sometimes be a little daunting, especially if you’re new to living a dairy free life. This year Aldi has come through with a wide selection of dairy free Eater Eggs as part of the ‘Free From’ range which is so good to see.
We’ve taste tested the full range of dairy free Easter eggs from Aldi so I’m going to share my thoughts with you today. First up Aldi have two luxury eggs which are both free from milk, gluten and egg. These eggs are £5.99 each and come in a more ‘grown up’ and luxury style of packaging. From looks alone I’d say that these would make for a very nice gift for dairy free friends and family.
The White Choc Lemon Drizzle Egg & Truffles was one of the first to catch my eye on the shelves in Aldi. Not only is the packaging pretty but the egg looks very grand and of course, it’s a rather unusual flavour. Now, this could be a bit of a Marmite egg. Some people will be Easter egg purists and love a standard plain chocolate egg but when it comes to the dairy free world I think supermarket own-brand eggs need a little something extra to really elevate the flavour.
I personally love lemon drizzle as a cake so I was very intrigued to try it in the form of an Easter egg, even though I don’t normally like dairy free white chocolate (it often just tastes overly sweet to mask the lack of dairy).Anyway, I was very excited to try this egg out and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

It’s a lovely big egg with lots of crunchy sugar pieces on the front. The egg itself has a lovely strong flavour of lemon, just as I’d hoped and there wasn’t that usual strange dairy free white chocolate taste at all – if you know, you know. Honestly, this egg is very moreish, the chocolate is creamy and the sugar nibs on the front give it a lovely crunch. The truffles were pretty good too.
Next up we have the Double Choc Brownie Egg & Truffles. Again, like the Lemon Drizzle Egg this one comes in a pretty box and the egg itself is marbled and looks fab. It gives it more of a special look than that of a standard supermarket own-brand egg.
Just like the lemon drizzle egg this brownie egg goes down very quickly. The shell isn’t too thin, the chocolate is creamy and I liked the super chocolatey flavour of the egg.
The truffles are okay, I’d have liked more of a salty kick to them but we still ate them all. The egg itself is the real winner though.
Next we move onto Aldi’s more affordable Free From eggs. These eggs are all priced at £2.99 which make them some of the cheapest on the dairy free market. The packaging across the range is bright and cheerful which makes them appealing for children.
The first egg in this range is the Eggstreme Choco Easter egg. This is a plain egg with marshmallows and chocolate buttons encrusted onto the front. The box is fun and colourful and the egg is fine. I say fine, because in terms of dairy free chocolate it is just that, fine. If you’re new to the world of dairy free chocolate then you probably won’t enjoy this at all. Remember I mentioned about overly sickly sweet dairy free chocolate trying to mask the lack of dairy? This has that kind of flavour although not as bad as some I’ve tried. My 5 year old liked this, especially the marshmallows on the front and he’s not dairy free so perhaps other children would be more than happy with this too!
Overall I personally wouldn’t buy this one for myself or for anyone else having tried it.
I had slightly higher hopes for Bertie the Bunny as it wasn’t a plain chocolate flavour but instead it is combined with orange. Unfortunately this just wasn’t so good, that’s not fair actually. It was fine. It wasn’t as bad as the plain flavour that’s for sure.
It has a very subtle orange flavour and as you can probably guess, my 5 year old enjoyed it. If there was more of an orange flavour to this bunny then I think I would have enjoyed it more.

I probably wouldn’t buy this for myself but I’d still eat it if it was given to me! I’ve realised my kids will be more than happy with an Easter bunny like this.
This Honeycomb Choco option is a much better option. Actually, I think it’s my favourite from Aldi’s Free From range not including their luxury options. The chocolate works well with the honeycomb pieces and I’d be quite happy to receive this as a gift.

Again, I thought the combo of white chocolate and strawberry would work really well together but it just wasn’t to my taste. The chocolate was creamy, that’s the one positive but the flavour was just very sickly sweet and not in a good way. Saying that, my partner liked this one as did my children (they liked all of them). Phil said it reminded him of those little white mice and ice creams from a pick and mix and he’ll more than happily eat the rest.

So there you have it. Big thumbs up for the Aldi luxury Free From eggs but a real mix of opinions for the rest. If I had to pick I’d go for the Lemon Drizzle egg because it really offers something different to the usual supermarket Easter eggs and if I wanted something a little cheaper it would be the Honeycomb egg.
