I always loved Nutella and when I switched fo a dairy free diet it was one of the things I found hard to give up. It’s wasn’t something I was eating on a daily basis but I always had a jar in the cupboard for those moments where I really fancied it.
Many years went by and I couldn’t find any dairy free dupes to my precious Nutella. I made my own homemade hazelnut chocolate spread from time to time. It was very tasty but wasn’t something I had the time to make on a regular basis and honestly, sometimes you just need a jar ready to go in the cupboard, especially for baking. I’ll share my recipe soon but thankfully it’s now 2023 and there are so many dairy free alternatives to Nutella at the supermarkets.
Today I’m going to share 5 dairy free alternatives to the much-loved hazelnut chocolate spread. I’ve tried all of these and enjoyed them but there are quite a few more on the market which I’ll have to get ’round to trying and sharing with you soon.
As always, please check the ingredients and may contain warnings of all the products mentioned to ensure they’re suitable for your allergy or intolerance. It’s also useful to check ingredients lists because recipes can change over time.
5 Delicious Dairy Free Alternatives to Nutella
JimJams Vegan No Added Sugar Hazelnut Chocolate Spread – £2.95 – This alternative to Nutella has been in my cupboard recently and is one I buy every now and then when it’s on offer. I find that it has a strong taste of hazelnut and the consistency is lovely and smooth. My son loves it and doesn’t seem to complain about it being a little less sweet than the real deal. Be careful when you’re buying Jim Jams products as they do both vegan and non vegan options. Always double check which jar you’re buying.
Where to buy: Ocado, Morrisons and Waitrose. Oh, Tesco have a Salted Caramel version.
M&S Plant Kitchen Smooth Hazelnut Chocolate Spread – £2.90 – This hazelnutty goodness from Marks & Spencer’s in-house brand, Plant Kitchen is delicious. If I order from Ocado or pop into M&S then I’ll grab a jar to stash away in the cupboard. Although, I do find that once the jar has been opened that it can be very dangerous. I could very easily (and often do) eat it straight from the jar. This is not as sweet as a traditional jar of Nutella but very tasty and a pretty good dupe.
Where to buy: In-store at M&S and Ocado.
Vego Crunchy Fine Hazelnut Chocolate Spread – £3.50 – I’m a big fan of Vego. They make chocolate bars that I’ve always described as Nutella in a chocolate bar form and a few years ago they launched their dairy free hazelnut chocolate spread. I had no doubt that this would be good the first time I tried it but what I didn’t expect was to find that this was way better than Nutella. Honestly, this stuff is delicious in its own right and to compare it to the market leader seems a bit rude.
Where to buy: ASDA and Holland & Barrett.
Mr Organic Dark Chocolate & Hazelnut Spread – £4.80 – This is another tasty dairy free hazelnut spread. It’s not the same as Nutella but has a lovely strong flavour of hazelnuts and is very much a dark chocolate spread (which I love). It also has a very thick consistency. At the time of writing this post it’s much more expensive than the others so I only tend to buy this when it’s on offer.
Where to buy: Amazon, Healthy Supplies, Ocado and Waitrose.
Valsoia Dairy Free Chocolate Spread – £4.20 – I really like Valsoia products and this chocolate spread did not disappoint. If you’re looking for an exact copy of Nutella but dairy free then this is the one to go for. It’s shot up in price recently but does go on offer from time to time.
Where to buy: Ocado.
